Las Vegas Alcohol Laws

Las Vegas has some of the most relaxed drinking rules around. But even the entertainment capital of the world imposes several restrictions when it comes to buying and consuming alcohol.

Keep scrolling to find out everything you need to know about Las Vegas alcohol laws before you head out for a night in town.

What Is the Drinking Age in Las Vegas?

The legal drinking age in Las Vegas is 21, just like everywhere else in the United States. Under Nevada law, it’s illegal for minors to consume or possess alcohol unless they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. You can legally buy and drink wine, beer, spirits, or liquor only if your photo ID confirms that you’re at least 21 years old.

In addition, it’s illegal to purchase alcohol for someone else who is under the age of 21. This is called ”contributing to the delinquency of a minor” and may result in immediate arrest and fines. As well as drinking underage, giving alcohol to a minor and presenting a fake ID to buy alcohol are considered misdemeanors and are punishable by hefty fines and up to six months in jail.

The same age limit also applies to entering many of the popular Las Vegas clubs and bars, so keep this in mind when you’re planning your next night out.

The Laws for Carrying an Open Container in Las Vegas

In downtown Las Vegas, you may walk around with an open container with alcohol as long as it’s made of paper, plastic, or aluminum and not glass. And that’s not all—the beverage must be purchased from a venue that holds an alcohol license such as a bar, restaurant, or casino.

On Fremont Street specifically, both glass and aluminum open containers are prohibited. You can drink outside only if you purchased your beverage at one of the large casinos like the El Cortez or Golden Nugget.

Places Where Drinking Isn’t Allowed in Las Vegas

If you want to consume alcohol in Las Vegas, you must be at least 1,000 feet away from churches, synagogues, public or private schools, hospitals, drug and alcohol treatment facilities, and homeless shelters.

What’s more, if you purchased liquor in a closed container, you are not allowed to consume it anywhere within 1,000 feet of the store. Drinking in parking lots is also not permitted and private neighborhoods often have their own rules regarding public drinking.

Can You Carry Glass Beverage Containers on the Vegas Strip?

Strolling around with an open container on the Vegas Strip is legal as long as the container is not made of glass. In fact, you are not allowed to carry any drink in a glass container, even a nonalcoholic one, to prevent the glass from littering the streets and causing injuries.

You can freely walk around with plastic, paper, or aluminum open containers, but you should keep in mind that aluminum may not be allowed during some special events.

Can You Have an Open Container in a Vehicle?

Nevada law strictly prohibits having open containers with alcohol—such as unsealed cans or uncorked bottles, for example—in vehicles. The rule applies regardless of whether you’re driving or not, also if you’re a passenger holding the container out of the reach of the driver.

Likewise, you are not allowed to have an open container and consume alcohol in the passenger seat of a taxi, an Uber or another ride-sharing car, or on public transportation. The only exception to the law is chartered services like limousines and party busses.

Until What Time Can Alcohol Be Sold in Las Vegas?

In Las Vegas alcohol can be bought and sold 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The state law of Nevada doesn’t impose any closing times for bars and other venues selling alcohol.
